The Drink That Got Me Through My Dissertation — and Never Left My Desk

Fanta Lemon Citrus Soda 500ml bottle — bright yellow label with condensation on the bottle, ready to drink

I want to be upfront about something: this is a review of a fizzy drink. I am aware that reviewing a fizzy drink with the same seriousness I might apply to, say, a car seat or a garden furniture cover is perhaps not strictly necessary. And yet here I am, because Fanta Lemon genuinely made a difference to my life at a specific and difficult moment, and I think that's worth saying out loud.

The Dissertation Winter

Last January I was in the final stretch of my master's dissertation. Twelve thousand words on urban planning policy, due in March, and I was spending approximately nine hours a day at my desk in a flat that was either too cold or too warm depending on whether the radiator had decided to cooperate. I was drinking too much coffee, sleeping too little, and existing in that particular state of low-grade stress that anyone who has written a long piece of academic work will recognise immediately.

The problem with coffee, beyond the obvious, is that by about 3pm it stops working and starts making things worse. I'd be jittery and unfocused at exactly the point in the afternoon when I needed to be neither. I needed something that felt like a treat — a small, reliable pleasure in a day that was otherwise entirely about word counts and citation formats — without the caffeine spike and crash cycle I was already trapped in.

My flatmate came home one evening with a bag of shopping that included a bottle of Fanta Lemon. She left it in the fridge. I tried it the following afternoon out of curiosity and mild desperation. That was the beginning.

The 500ml bottle — the right size for a desk. Portable, individual, and exactly enough.

Why Fanta Lemon Specifically

I know what you're thinking: it's a fizzy drink, they're all the same. They're not, actually, and lemon is the flavour that proves it. Fanta Lemon has a sharpness that orange sodas don't — a citrus bite that cuts through the afternoon fog in a way that feels genuinely refreshing rather than just sweet. The carbonation is part of it too. There's something about the combination of cold, sparkling, and sharp that resets your focus in a way that a glass of water, however virtuous, simply doesn't.

I found the Fanta Lemon 500ml bottle available in the Soda collection on ALTOE, which meant I could order it alongside everything else rather than making a separate trip. The 500ml size is the right call for a desk drink — large enough to last a proper work session, small enough that it's still cold by the time you finish it. I started keeping a small stock in the fridge and rationing myself to one per afternoon, which gave me something to look forward to at the point in the day when I most needed it.

The 3pm Ritual

It became a ritual, which I think is the key word. At 3pm, I'd save my document, get up from my desk, go to the kitchen, open a Fanta Lemon, and sit somewhere that wasn't my desk chair for five minutes. Then I'd go back and work for another three hours. The drink was the signal — the thing that marked the transition from the morning session to the afternoon push. It sounds small because it is small. But small rituals matter enormously when you're in a long, grinding piece of work, and having something reliable and genuinely enjoyable to anchor your day around is more valuable than it sounds.

I submitted my dissertation in March. I got a distinction. I am not crediting Fanta Lemon with the distinction — that would be absurd — but I am crediting it with keeping the 3pm hours functional, and the 3pm hours were not nothing.

Beyond the Dissertation

Here's the thing: I still drink it. The dissertation is done, the master's is finished, I'm now working full-time in a planning consultancy, and Fanta Lemon is still in my fridge. The 3pm ritual survived the transition from student to professional with minimal adjustment. My colleagues have noticed. Two of them have started doing the same thing. I consider this a minor public service.

The portability of the 500ml bottle is something I've come to appreciate more in a working context than I did as a student. It fits in a bag, it doesn't require a glass, and it's the right amount for a single sitting. I've taken it to meetings (informal ones), on train journeys, and to the park on lunch breaks. It travels well, which is not something you think about until you're thinking about it.

An Honest Assessment

It's a fizzy drink. It's not going to change your life in the way that, say, the right car seat or the right nursing pillow might. But it will reliably make a specific part of your day better, and that's not nothing. The lemon flavour is sharp and clean without being artificial-tasting. The carbonation is satisfying. The 500ml size is exactly right. The Fanta brand has been doing this for long enough that the quality is consistent — you know what you're getting, and what you're getting is good.

If you're looking for a reliable, genuinely refreshing soft drink that earns its place in your daily routine, you'll find the Fanta Lemon 500ml in the Soda and Beverages collections, and the broader Food, Beverages & Tobacco range on ALTOE. Stock up. Your 3pm self will thank you.
