I never thought a dress could genuinely change how I felt walking into a room. But here I am, writing about one that did.
The Moment I Knew I Needed It
It was a Thursday afternoon in late May. I had three events coming up in the space of two weeks – a friend's garden birthday lunch, a work summer drinks do, and a family gathering I'd been quietly dreading. My wardrobe, which I'd convinced myself was perfectly adequate, suddenly felt like a collection of things that were almost right but never quite there. Too casual. Too formal. Too tired.
I'd been scrolling through ALTOE when the red stopped me. Not a shout-red. A confident, considered red. The kind that says something without trying too hard.
Why I Chose This Particular Dress
I've been burned before by dresses that photograph beautifully and feel awful to actually wear. So I read everything. The 100% cotton shell was the first thing that won me over – I run warm, and the idea of spending a summer afternoon in polyester is genuinely upsetting. Breathable, all-day comfort wasn't marketing copy to me; it was a requirement.

The length – 114cm – hits just below the knee on me, which I find flattering and practical in equal measure. The machine-washable care instruction is something I've come to appreciate more than I expected; I've washed it twice now and it's come out looking exactly as it did on day one.
I've worn it four times since those original three events. I've stopped thinking of it as a special-occasion dress and started thinking of it as just a dress I reach for when I want to feel like myself, but a slightly more composed version of myself.
The Difference It Made
This sounds like an overstatement, but I'll say it anyway: having one dress that genuinely works – that fits properly, feels good, travels well, and earns compliments without demanding attention – has made getting dressed less of a negotiation. I open my wardrobe and there it is, a reliable answer to a question I used to find stressful.
That's what good clothing does, I think. It removes friction. It gives you one less thing to think about. And occasionally, it makes your aunt say you look put together.
