The Dry Patches That Appeared in Week Three
My daughter Freya was born in October. She was healthy, she was beautiful, and by week three she had developed dry, red patches on both cheeks that made her look permanently windswept and that I could not stop worrying about.
The midwife said it was common. The health visitor said it would likely resolve on its own. Both were probably right, but watching your newborn's skin look irritated and uncomfortable while you wait for it to resolve on its own is not a particularly easy thing to do when you are three weeks postpartum and operating on four hours of sleep.
I tried the baby moisturiser that had come in our hospital bag. It made the patches look worse. I tried a well-known baby lotion that a friend had recommended. Freya's skin went redder within an hour. I tried doing nothing, which felt like giving up. The patches spread slightly towards her nose and I decided I needed to find something that was actually formulated for sensitive newborn skin rather than just marketed at babies.
Finding Weleda
I spent an evening reading about baby skincare ingredients while Freya slept on my chest. What I was looking for was something with no synthetic preservatives, no mineral oils, no artificial fragrances – the things that had likely been irritating her skin in the products I had already tried – and something with active soothing ingredients rather than just a neutral barrier cream.
Calendula kept coming up. The plant has a long history of use in skincare for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, and it is particularly well-regarded for sensitive and reactive skin. Weleda, a brand I recognised from my own skincare, had a baby face cream built around organic calendula extract, and it had been developed alongside midwives and pharmacists specifically for newborn skin. That combination of botanical credentials and clinical development felt like exactly what I needed.
The Weleda Calendula Baby Face Cream was free from everything I wanted to avoid: no synthetic preservatives, no artificial fragrances, no mineral oils. The active ingredients – organic calendula extract, skin-friendly lanolin, and organic almond oil – were all things I recognised and trusted. It had been dermatologically tested. The 50ml size was practical for daily use without committing to a large quantity before I knew how Freya's skin would respond.
I found it in the Face Moisturisers collection at ALTOE and ordered it that same evening.

First Application: Cautious Hope
It arrived the next day. The cream has a gentle, faintly herbal scent from the calendula – nothing synthetic, nothing sharp, just a soft botanical warmth that I found immediately reassuring. The texture is rich but not heavy; it absorbed into Freya's skin without leaving a greasy residue, which had been a problem with some of the other products I had tried.
I applied a small amount to the dry patches that evening after her bath, working it in gently with my fingertips. She did not react. No redness, no fussing, no sign of irritation. I went to bed cautiously optimistic and checked her face approximately four times before I fell asleep.
By the following morning the patches looked calmer. Not gone – but visibly less angry, less raised, less red. I applied the cream again after her morning feed. By the end of the second day the improvement was clear enough that my husband noticed without me pointing it out.

Eight Months On: A Permanent Part of Our Routine
Freya is eight months old now. The dry patches cleared completely within two weeks of starting the Weleda cream and have not returned. We use it every evening after her bath as part of her bedtime routine – it has become one of those small rituals that marks the transition from the busy part of the day to the quiet part, and she has come to associate the gentle application with the calm that follows.
Her skin is soft, hydrated, and completely clear. She has not had any further reactions or irritation. I have not needed to try anything else.
The 50ml tube lasts us approximately six to eight weeks with daily use, which makes it an extremely reasonable ongoing cost for something that has made such a consistent difference. I have bought four tubes now and will continue buying it for as long as Freya needs a face cream, and probably beyond.
I have recommended it to every new parent I know who has mentioned baby skin concerns. Two of them have come back to thank me. That is the best endorsement I can offer.
For Any Parent in the Same Position
If your baby has dry, red, or irritated skin and the standard baby products are not helping – or are making things worse – the ingredient list is worth looking at carefully. Synthetic preservatives, mineral oils, and artificial fragrances are common irritants in baby skincare products that are otherwise marketed as gentle. The Weleda Calendula cream contains none of them and is built around ingredients with genuine soothing properties.
It worked for Freya when nothing else did. I cannot promise it will work for every baby, because every baby's skin is different. But it is the product I would try first if I were starting again, and it is the product I will reach for without hesitation if we have another child.
