A Decade of Playing It Safe With White
My bathroom has always had white towels. Not because I particularly love white towels, but because white felt safe – easy to bleach if they stained, easy to match, easy to replace without worrying about whether the new ones would coordinate with the old ones. White was the absence of a decision, and for ten years I had been making the absence of a decision every time I needed new towels.
The problem with white towels, I had gradually come to realise, is that they show everything. Every mark, every shadow of use, every imperfect wash. My bathroom is white-tiled with chrome fixtures, and white towels against white tiles created a kind of visual blankness that was clean but completely without character. It looked like a budget hotel rather than a home.
I had been looking at navy towels for about a year. Saving images, adding things to wishlists, then talking myself out of it on the grounds that navy might fade, or clash, or be a mistake I would regret. Then a friend redecorated her bathroom in navy and white and sent me a photo, and I stopped deliberating and ordered a set the same afternoon.

It looked completely different. Not because anything structural had changed – the same white tiles, the same chrome fixtures, the same layout – but because the deep navy created a focal point and a sense of intention that the white towels had never provided. The bathroom looked like someone had thought about it. Like someone lived there who had opinions about how things should look.
I took a photograph and sent it to my friend. She replied: “finally.”
The towels themselves were immediately impressive. The 434 GSM weight is lighter than some premium sets but it does not feel lightweight – the combed cotton has a density and softness that belies the GSM number. They were absorbent from first use, which is not always the case with new cotton towels that sometimes need a few washes to reach full absorbency.
Six Months On: The Navy Has Held
This was my primary concern going in: would the colour last? Six months and approximately twenty-five washes later, the answer is yes. The deep navy is as rich and consistent as it was when the towels arrived. There is no fading at the edges, no patchy lightening, no of the colour degradation I had feared. The OEKO-TEX certification was clearly not just a label – the dye quality is genuinely good.
The cotton has softened with washing in the way that good quality cotton does. The towels feel better now than they did new, which is the mark of a well-made textile. They have been through warm washes, tumble drying, and the general rigours of daily use by someone who does not treat laundry with particular delicacy, and they look and feel as though they have years of good use ahead of them.
My bathroom still makes me happy every time I walk into it. That is not something I could have said about it a year ago. A set of towels did that. I am still slightly surprised by how much difference it made.
For Anyone Still Deliberating About Colour
If you have been looking at navy towels and talking yourself out of it, stop talking yourself out of it. The colour will not fade if the quality is right, and the quality here is right. Dark towels against light tiles is one of the most effective and lowest-effort ways to give a bathroom character and intention. It costs the price of a towel set and takes the time of one wash cycle.
I waited a year. I wish I had not.
