I need to tell you about the autopsy report.
The Deddy Bears Series 2 Mystery Body Bag is a 30cm jumbo plush toy that arrives inside a mystery body bag. You don't know which of the six Series 2 characters you're getting until you unzip it. Inside the body bag, alongside your bear, is an autopsy report detailing their cause of death.
I read the autopsy report three times. I showed it to my flatmate. We both laughed for about two minutes. It is the most committed piece of product documentation I have ever encountered, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment.
Why I Ordered It
I already have several of the Series 2 coffin plush bears — the 15cm versions that arrive in their individual coffins. I love them. They're on my shelf and they're excellent. But when I found out about the jumbo body bag version, I knew immediately I needed to experience it separately. The coffin plush and the body bag are different products with different energies, and I wanted both.
The mystery element was the specific thing that made the body bag version compelling in a way the coffin plush isn't. With the coffin plush, you choose your character. With the body bag, you don't know who you're getting until you unzip it. That uncertainty is part of the product. The unboxing is the experience, not just the means of getting to the product.
I ordered it on a Thursday evening. It arrived on Saturday morning. I unzipped it at the kitchen table with my flatmate watching, because some things deserve an audience.
The Unboxing
The body bag itself is properly body-bag shaped and properly body-bag sized for a 30cm bear, which is to say it's substantial. It has the Deddy Bears branding on it and it looks, sitting on a kitchen table on a Saturday morning, genuinely and delightfully wrong in the best possible way.
I unzipped it slowly, for dramatic effect. My flatmate was filming on their phone. Inside: Muertobear, 30cm, looking up at me with the serene expression of a bear who has made peace with their situation. And the autopsy report, folded neatly, detailing the circumstances of Muertobear's demise in the kind of specific, deadpan detail that suggests someone had a very good time writing it.
I read it aloud. My flatmate lost it completely. The video is saved and will not be shared publicly but it is extremely funny.
Muertobear is, at 30cm, a genuinely substantial plush. The Day of the Dead aesthetic is rendered beautifully at this scale — the detail work that's present but compact in the 15cm version has room to breathe at 30cm, and the result is a bear that looks genuinely impressive on a shelf rather than just charming. He's soft, well-made, and has the particular quality of a plush that's been designed with care rather than produced to a price point.
The Mystery Element — Worth It?
I want to address this directly because I know it's the thing that gives some people pause. You're paying for a product without knowing which character you'll receive. Is that worth it?
For me, yes, unequivocally. The mystery is the point. The experience of not knowing, of the slow unzip, of the reveal — that's a different kind of value from simply choosing a character and receiving it. It's the difference between buying a book you've already read and opening one you haven't. The uncertainty is the feature.
I got Muertobear, who was genuinely one of my top choices from the Series 2 lineup. If I'd got Zombat or Frankenbear I'd have been equally happy. If I'd got Two-Fur, who is my least favourite of the six, I'd have been fine with it because the experience of getting there was worth it regardless of the outcome. That's the right relationship to have with a mystery product.
Where He Lives Now
Muertobear is on the shelf above my desk, next to the 15cm coffin plush versions of Frankenbear and Frostbite. At 30cm he's twice their height and has a presence that the smaller versions don't quite achieve. The autopsy report is pinned to the wall next to him, because it deserves to be displayed. It is, I maintain, excellent writing.
My flatmate has since ordered one. They got Frankenbear. The unboxing video is also saved and also extremely funny.
My Verdict
If you already love the Deddy Bears and want a different experience from the coffin plush, or if you're new to the range and want to start with something theatrical and jumbo-sized — the Deddy Bears Series 2 Mystery Body Bag is the one.
