The Wall Plaque That Turned My Son's Room Into His Favourite Place on Earth

My son Theo is six years old and absolutely obsessed with maps. Not Google Maps — actual, physical maps. He has a laminated world map on his desk that he traces with his finger while I read to him at night, pointing at countries and asking me questions I definitely can't always answer. He talks about expeditions. He calls the garden "the wilderness." He is, in the best possible way, completely convinced that the world is full of things waiting to be discovered.

So when we finally decided to properly do up his bedroom last spring, I knew I wanted the room to reflect that. Not just a generic "kids room" with cartoon characters he'd grow out of in eighteen months — something that actually felt like him. Something that would grow with him and keep feeding that sense of wonder.

The Problem With Most Kids' Wall Decor

I spent a genuinely embarrassing amount of time looking at wall art online. Most of what I found fell into two camps: either it was so babyish it would be irrelevant by the time he turned seven, or it was trying so hard to be "cool" that it felt cold and impersonal. I wanted something warm. Something with a message. Something that would make him feel like his room was a place where big things were possible.

I'd almost given up and settled for a plain canvas print when I came across the Orsina Kids Let New Adventures Begin Wall Plaque on ALTOE. I stopped scrolling immediately.

Why This One

The phrase alone — "Let New Adventures Begin" — felt like it had been written for Theo specifically. But it was the design that really won me over. The grey wood base gave it a grown-up, almost rustic quality that I knew wouldn't look out of place as he got older, while the playful coloured lettering kept it fun and age-appropriate right now. It wasn't trying to be twee. It wasn't shouting. It just said something true, in a way that looked genuinely lovely.

The grey wood finish and playful typography — understated enough to last, characterful enough to matter.

I also appreciated that it was lightweight. We rent, which means I'm always nervous about putting things on walls — the fewer heavy-duty fixings required, the better. The plaque is easy to hang and, if needed, easy to reposition without leaving a mess behind.

I ordered it the same evening.

Hanging It Up — and Theo's Reaction

It arrived well-packaged and exactly as described. I hung it above his bookshelf — the one that's slowly filling up with atlases and nature encyclopaedias — while he was at school, so it would be a surprise when he got home.

He walked into his room, dropped his bag, looked at the wall, and said: "Mum. That's perfect."

Six years old. "That's perfect." I nearly cried.

Three Months On

We're now a few months down the line and the plaque is still very much the centrepiece of his room. He's pointed it out to every friend who's come over. He told his teacher about it. Last week he informed me, completely unprompted, that he reads it every morning before school "to get ready for the day."

I don't think I can overstate how much a single piece of wall decor has contributed to the atmosphere of that room. It's not just decoration — it's a daily reminder to a small person that the world is big and exciting and worth exploring. That feels like exactly the right thing to have on a child's wall.

If you're trying to create a space that actually means something to your child, I'd start here. Take a look at the Decorative Plaques collection for more pieces like this, browse the full Decor range for room styling ideas, or check out the Home & Garden collection if you're refreshing more than one space. And if you want to see what's just arrived, the Latest Products collection is always worth a browse.

But honestly? If your child has even a flicker of that adventurous spirit, the Let New Adventures Begin Wall Plaque might just be the one thing their room has been waiting for.
