I want to tell you about the socks that fixed my blisters, improved my circulation, and also make me smile every single morning when I put them on. That last part matters more than I expected.
My name is Jamie Osei. I am a secondary school PE teacher from Cardiff, and I run. Not competitively, not particularly fast, but consistently. Three or four times a week, usually 5 to 10 kilometres, with the occasional half marathon when I am feeling ambitious. I have been doing this for about six years, and for two of those years I had a blister problem that I could not solve.
The Blister Problem
Not catastrophic blisters. Just persistent ones. The kind that form on the ball of the foot and the inside of the heel after anything over 7 kilometres, that take a few days to settle, and that make the next run slightly less enjoyable than it should be. I had tried different trainers, different lacing techniques, different anti-chafe products. I had tried thicker socks and thinner socks and double-layer socks. Nothing had fully resolved it.

A colleague who runs ultramarathons, and who therefore has strong opinions about everything foot-related, told me I needed to look at my socks properly. Not just thickness, but construction. Arch support. Anti-abrasion fibres. Compression. I had been treating socks as an afterthought. She was suggesting they were actually the foundation.
Finding the HEXXEE Smiley Socks
I will be honest: I found these because of the design. I was browsing ALTOE and the melted smiley face caught my eye. Classic smiley faces, dripped and distorted across the sock in a way that is playful without being loud. I clicked through expecting a novelty sock and found something considerably more serious underneath the fun exterior.

The HEXXEE Smiley Socks are built on the HEXXEE 1.0 platform, which is a proper performance athletic sock. Built-in arch support. Plush cushioning at the ankle and forefoot for impact absorption. Enhanced airflow across the top of the foot. Anti-abrasion fibres specifically designed for long-distance running where rubbing is most common. Four-yarn terry loops for softness and support. And 15 mmHg compression for circulation benefits.
That is a serious specification. At £11.19, it is also a very reasonable price for what you are getting. I ordered two pairs.
First Run
I wore them for an 8-kilometre run the following Saturday morning. The arch support was immediately noticeable in a way I had not experienced from a sock before, a gentle but definite sense of the foot being held correctly. The cushioning at the forefoot absorbed impact without making the shoe feel padded or disconnected from the ground.

I finished the run. I took my shoes off. I checked my feet.
No blisters. Not even the beginning of one.
I stood in the hallway for a moment genuinely unsure what to do with that information. Eight kilometres, the distance that had reliably produced a blister on the ball of my left foot for two years, and nothing. I put it down to a good day and went again on Tuesday.
Same result.
Five Months On
I have not had a blister since switching to these socks. That is not an exaggeration. Five months of consistent running, including two half marathons, and the blister problem that I had been managing and working around for two years has simply stopped.

The compression has made a noticeable difference to how my legs feel after longer runs. Less of that heavy, slightly swollen feeling in the feet and ankles that I had come to accept as normal. Recovery feels faster, though I acknowledge that is harder to measure precisely.

I now own five pairs across different colourways. The black ones for races when I want to look vaguely serious. The pink and blue ones for training. The mustard ones because my partner dared me to and I have no regrets.

They wash well at 30 degrees and hang dry quickly. The construction has held up through months of regular use without any thinning or loss of cushioning. HEXXEE say a pair can last two years or longer with correct care, and based on what I have seen so far, I believe them.

And yes, they make me smile every morning when I put them on. That is not nothing. Starting a run in a good mood is underrated.
The Verdict
If you run and you have been treating socks as an afterthought, stop. The right sock makes a genuine, measurable difference to comfort, performance and recovery. These are the right sock, and they happen to also be the most cheerful thing in my kit bag.
