The Sleep Vest That Fixed My Overheating Problem

Organic Cotton Night Vest Womens — fine lightweight 100% organic cotton fabric with fine shoulder straps and low-cut back for breathable comfortable sleep

I run hot at night. I have run hot at night for as long as I can remember, and for most of my adult life I have managed this through a combination of a light duvet, an open window, and accepting that I would wake up at least once in the night feeling too warm. I had tried various solutions — different duvet togs, a cooling mattress topper, a fan — and while each helped marginally, none of them addressed the thing that was actually causing the problem: what I was sleeping in.

I had been sleeping in synthetic sleepwear. Not because I preferred it, but because it was what was available in the styles I liked. Synthetic fabrics do not breathe. They trap heat against the body and do not allow moisture to evaporate, which is the opposite of what someone who runs hot at night needs from their sleepwear.

The Organic Cotton Night Vest is what I switched to. The overheating problem has largely resolved.

Why Fabric Matters for Sleep

Sleep quality is significantly affected by body temperature. The body naturally cools during sleep as part of the circadian rhythm, and anything that interferes with that cooling — including sleepwear that traps heat — disrupts the sleep cycle. Waking in the night feeling too warm is not just uncomfortable; it is a sign that the body's temperature regulation is being impeded.

Natural fibres, particularly cotton, breathe in a way that synthetic fabrics do not. Cotton allows air to circulate against the skin and allows moisture to evaporate, which supports the body's natural cooling process rather than working against it. Fine, lightweight cotton — the kind used in the Organic Cotton Night Vest — is the most breathable option, providing coverage without insulation.

Why the Organic Cotton Night Vest

The Organic Cotton Night Vest met every requirement. 100% organic cotton — not a cotton blend with synthetic fibres that would compromise the breathability, but pure organic cotton throughout. The fabric is described as fine and very light, which is exactly the weight needed for sleepwear: present enough to feel like you are wearing something, light enough not to add any warmth.

The fine shoulder straps and low-cut back maximise the skin surface that is in contact with air rather than fabric, which is the design decision that makes the most difference for someone who runs hot. Less fabric means more airflow. The low-cut back in particular allows the upper back — an area that generates significant heat during sleep — to breathe freely.

The organic cotton credential also matters to me. Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in the world. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, which is better for the environment and, for sleepwear worn directly against the skin for eight hours a night, better for the wearer too.

I found it through ALTOE's Lingerie collection, and it also sits within the Clothing and Apparel & Accessories collections if you want to browse the wider range.

The First Night: A Measurable Difference

I wore the Organic Cotton Night Vest for the first time on a Thursday. I woke once in the night — not from overheating, but from an external noise. I went back to sleep immediately. I had not had an uninterrupted night's sleep in longer than I could accurately remember.

The second night: uninterrupted. The third night: uninterrupted. By the end of the first week, I had slept through five of seven nights. The previous week, I had woken from overheating on four of seven nights. The change was immediate and significant.

The fine cotton fabric felt different from synthetic sleepwear immediately — softer, lighter, and with a quality of breathability that I could feel rather than just infer. The low-cut back made a noticeable difference to how cool my upper back felt during the night.

Five Months and Five Vests Later

I now own five Organic Cotton Night Vests. I bought the first, wore it for a week, and then bought four more so that I had a full week's rotation without needing to wash mid-week. They wash easily, dry quickly, and have retained their softness and shape across months of regular washing.

My sleep quality has improved measurably. I wake less frequently, fall back to sleep more easily when I do wake, and feel more rested in the mornings. I had been attributing my poor sleep to stress, to screen time, to the general demands of a busy life. The actual cause was what I was sleeping in.

If you run hot at night and you have been sleeping in synthetic fabrics, the Organic Cotton Night Vest is the change I would make first. Browse the Lingerie collection at ALTOE. Buy one. Wear it for a week. Count how many nights you sleep through. Then buy four more.
