My daughter Imara is fourteen months old and has recently discovered that the world outside the house is significantly more interesting than the world inside it. She wants to be in the garden constantly. She wants to touch the plants, investigate the patio, and generally explore everything within reach. What she couldn’t do, until we got the Hedstrom folding baby swing, was actually enjoy the garden in a sustained way — she’d get frustrated when she couldn’t walk far enough or fast enough to get where she wanted to go, and the sessions outside would end in tears.
The swing changed that completely. She’s been in it every day since we set it up, and the garden has become the place she most wants to be.
What We Were Looking For
We have a small garden — a paved patio area and a patch of lawn, nothing elaborate. I’d been thinking about getting some outdoor play equipment for Imara since she started pulling herself up and showing interest in the outside world, but most of what I’d looked at was either too large for our space, too expensive for something she’d use for a limited period, or required permanent installation that I wasn’t prepared to do in a rented garden.
The folding aspect of the Hedstrom swing was the thing that made it viable for us. A swing that folds flat can be stored in the shed when not in use, brought out when needed, and doesn’t require any ground anchoring or permanent setup. That flexibility was essential.
Why I Chose the Hedstrom Folding Baby Swing
The Hedstrom Folding Baby Swing was the right choice for several reasons. The age range of 6 to 36 months meant it would be appropriate for Imara now and for the next couple of years — I wasn’t buying something she’d outgrow in three months. The high back support was important for her current stage of development — at fourteen months she doesn’t have the core strength to sit unsupported in a standard swing seat, and the high back keeps her properly positioned throughout.
The adjustable design meant the swing height could be set appropriately for her size, and the fact that it works both indoors and outdoors meant we could use it on rainy days in the living room as well as in the garden on sunny ones. That dual-use capability was a genuine bonus I hadn’t fully appreciated when I bought it.
Setup — Straightforward
The swing arrived flat-packed and assembled in about twenty minutes with the included instructions. No tools were required beyond what was included in the box. The frame locks into position securely when unfolded — there’s a satisfying click when each joint locks, which gives you confidence that it’s properly assembled before you put a child in it.
The first time I put Imara in it she looked uncertain for about ten seconds and then started laughing. That was the end of any doubt about whether it had been a good purchase.
Three Months of Daily Use
We’ve had the swing for three months and it’s been used every day the weather has allowed — and on several days when the weather hasn’t, indoors. The frame is stable and hasn’t shifted or wobbled during use. The seat has held its shape and the fabric hasn’t faded or deteriorated despite regular outdoor exposure. The locking joints are still as secure as they were on day one.
Imara has gone from ten-minute garden sessions that ended in frustration to forty-five-minute sessions that end only because it’s time for lunch or a nap. The swing gives her something to do that she genuinely enjoys, which means the garden has become a positive experience rather than a frustrating one. That change in her relationship with outdoor time has been one of the more unexpected benefits of a piece of play equipment.
The Folding and Storage
The fold is genuinely quick — about thirty seconds once you know the sequence. It stores flat against the wall of our shed and takes up minimal space. I bring it out in the morning when we’re planning to use the garden and fold it away in the evening. That routine has become completely automatic and adds no meaningful time to the process of getting outside.
The fact that it doesn’t require ground anchoring means I can position it wherever the sun is best in the garden, which changes through the day. That flexibility is something I hadn’t thought about when buying it but has turned out to be genuinely useful.
Where to Find It
The Hedstrom Folding Baby Swing is available in the Play Swings and Outdoor Play Equipment collections, within the broader Toys & Games range.
If you have a baby or toddler and you’re looking for outdoor play equipment that works in a small garden, doesn’t require permanent installation, and can be stored compactly, this is the one I’d recommend. Three months of daily use and Imara still gets excited when she sees it coming out of the shed. That’s the best possible endorsement a piece of play equipment can have.
