Two Years of Wanting Platinum Hair and Talking Myself Out of It
I have wanted platinum hair since I was about twenty-three. I am now twenty-eight. For five years I have been having the same conversation with myself: I want it, but the damage will be catastrophic, but I really want it, but my hair will fall out, but other people manage it, but those people probably have different hair to me.
My hair is a natural level four – a deep, warm brown. Going platinum from that starting point is not a small undertaking. I knew that. Every article I read, every video I watched, every hairdresser I consulted confirmed it: you will need multiple sessions, you will need to be patient, and you will need a lightener that actually protects the hair structure while it lifts.
That last point was the one that kept stopping me. Most bleach powders I had read about felt like a trade-off: lift or integrity, but not both. Then I started reading about Plex technology – bonding agents integrated directly into the lightener formula – and the Wella Blondor Plex kept coming up as the professional standard. My hairdresser used it in the salon. I decided to find out if I could use it at home.
Why the Wella Blondor Plex
The Wella Blondor Plex Multi Blonde Hair Lightener Powder stood out for several reasons that went beyond the brand name:
- Integrated Plex technology – bonding agents built into the formula protect hair structure during the lightening process, not as an add-on but as a core part of how it works
- Multi-blonde versatility – engineered to work across different hair types and textures, which mattered given my starting point
- 800g professional size – going from level four to platinum is a multi-session process; I needed enough product to do it properly without running out halfway through
- Professional-grade formula – this is what salons use, which meant I had a reference point for how it should perform
I found it in the Hair Colour collection at ALTOE. The 800g size felt like a commitment, but given the scope of what I was attempting, it was the right call. I ordered it alongside a good quality developer and a deep conditioning treatment, and I did my research thoroughly before I started.
Session One: Cautious and Methodical
I want to be clear: I did not rush this. I watched tutorials, I did a strand test, I timed everything carefully. The Blondor Plex mixed to a smooth, consistent paste that was easy to apply and did not drip or run. I applied it in sections, starting at the ends and working towards the roots, and monitored the lift every ten minutes.
The lift was significant and even. My hair went from a warm level four to approximately a level eight in the first session – a golden yellow that was exactly where I expected to be at this stage. More importantly, when I rinsed and dried my hair, it did not feel destroyed. It felt processed, yes – there was a slight change in texture – but it was not the straw-like brittleness I had been dreading. The Plex technology was clearly doing something real.
I waited three weeks before session two.
Session Two and Three: Building Towards Platinum
The second session took me to a pale yellow, level nine to ten. The third, applied carefully to the remaining warm tones, brought me to the cool, pale blonde I had been working towards. Between each session I used a deep conditioning mask religiously and kept heat styling to a minimum.
The consistency of the Blondor Plex across all three sessions was one of the things I valued most. Each application behaved the same way – same mixing ratio, same processing time, same predictable lift. There were no surprises, no uneven patches, no sections that lifted faster or slower than others. For a home application, that consistency is everything.
Six Months On: The Hair I Wanted
I have been platinum for six months now. My hair is not in the condition it was before I started – that would be unrealistic to claim – but it is in significantly better condition than I feared it would be. The Plex technology made a genuine difference to the integrity of my hair through the lightening process, and the careful aftercare I maintained between sessions has meant that my ends are still intact and my hair still has movement and shine.
More than the technical outcome, though: I have the hair I wanted. The hair I talked myself out of for five years. Every time I catch my reflection I feel a small, quiet satisfaction that has not worn off in six months. That is not nothing. That is, in fact, quite a lot.
The 800g tub has lasted me all three sessions plus several touch-up applications on my roots. It is still not empty. The value for money on the professional size is genuinely excellent.
A Note on Doing This at Home
I want to be honest: lightening dark hair at home is not without risk, and I would not recommend rushing it or skipping the strand test. The Wella Blondor Plex is a professional-grade product that performs professionally – but that means it requires the same care and attention you would expect in a salon setting. Do your research, be patient, and treat your hair well between sessions. If you do, the results are remarkable.
