The Mirror That Made My Bedroom Feel Twice the Size

My bedroom is small. Not unworkably small — there’s a double bed, a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, and enough floor space to move around without turning sideways — but small enough that it had always felt slightly cramped and darker than I’d have liked. I’d been meaning to do something about it for a couple of years without having a clear idea of what that something should be.

The answer turned out to be a mirror. Specifically, this full length wooden wall mounted mirror in black, which I hung on the wall opposite the window six weeks ago and which has made the room feel genuinely different — larger, brighter, and more considered — in a way that no other single change has managed.

What I Was Trying to Solve

The bedroom had two problems. The first was the sense of cramped space — the walls felt close and the room felt smaller than its actual dimensions. The second was the light — the window faces north and the room never gets direct sunlight, which meant it always felt slightly dim even during the day.

I’d read enough about interior design to know that mirrors address both of these problems. A large mirror reflects light around the room and creates the visual impression of additional space by reflecting the room back at you. The theory was clear. What I needed was the right mirror — one that would work with the existing furniture and colour scheme without looking like an afterthought.

Why I Chose This Mirror

The Full Length Wooden Wall Mounted Mirror in Black was the right choice for several reasons. The 35x110cm dimensions were right for the wall space I had available — tall enough to be a full length mirror, narrow enough not to overwhelm the wall. The slim wooden frame in black was exactly the aesthetic I was looking for — clean, simple, and compatible with the dark furniture in the room without being heavy or ornate.

The wall-mounted design was also important. A freestanding mirror takes up floor space, which I didn’t have to spare. A wall-mounted mirror uses vertical space instead, which is always available even in a small room. And a mirror that’s fixed to the wall can’t be knocked over, which matters in a room where you’re moving around in the dark at six in the morning.

Installation

The mirror came with wall fixings and a clear instruction sheet. I hung it myself in about twenty minutes — the main time was spent finding the right position on the wall and making sure it was level. The fixings are secure and the mirror hasn’t shifted or tilted since installation. For a mirror of this size and weight, the mounting hardware is appropriately substantial.

I positioned it on the wall directly opposite the window, which maximises the light reflection. The north-facing window light bounces off the mirror and distributes around the room in a way that makes the space feel noticeably brighter during the day. In the evening with the bedroom lamp on, the mirror doubles the apparent light source and makes the room feel warmer and more inviting.

The Transformation

The effect was immediate. The room looked larger from the moment the mirror went up — the reflection of the window and the opposite wall creates a visual depth that wasn’t there before. The room doesn’t look like it has a mirror in it; it looks like it has more space. That’s the mark of a well-placed mirror doing its job properly.

The practical function is also excellent. At 110cm tall, the mirror shows me from head to mid-thigh when I’m standing at a normal distance from it, which is enough to check a full outfit before leaving the house. I’d been using the wardrobe door mirror for this, which was awkward and poorly positioned. Having a dedicated full-length mirror in a good position has made the morning routine noticeably smoother.

Six Weeks On

The mirror has been up for six weeks and the room still feels different every time I walk into it. That initial impression of more space and more light hasn’t faded — if anything I’ve become more aware of how much the room has improved because I can now remember what it looked like before.

The black wooden frame has stayed clean and hasn’t shown any marks or deterioration. The mirror glass is clear and hasn’t developed any spots or cloudiness. The fixings are still completely secure. For a piece of home furniture that’s in daily use, the quality has been exactly right.

If you have a small or dark room and you’ve been trying to work out what would make the most difference, I’d suggest a full-length wall mirror before anything else. It’s the single change that has had the most visible impact on my bedroom, and it cost less than a new lamp or a set of curtains. The right mirror in the right position is one of the most effective things you can do to a room, and this one is the right mirror.
