The Box That Kept My Kids Outside for an Entire Summer

PoundFun Outdoor Toys Mega Surprise Box – 12-piece kids activity set with a variety of outdoor toys and games for children to play outside in the garden or park

The summer holidays are six weeks long. I know this because I have two children, aged seven and nine, and every year I spend approximately the first week of the holidays feeling optimistic about all the things we're going to do together, and approximately the remaining five weeks managing the reality of two children who have exhausted their ideas and are now looking at me expectantly.

Last summer was different. Last summer I bought the PoundFun Outdoor Toys Mega Surprise Box in the first week of July, put it in the garden, and watched my children spend the next six weeks outside. I am not exaggerating. Six weeks. Outside. Without being asked.

It was the best £20 I have ever spent.

Why I Decided I Needed It

The problem with summer holidays is not a lack of things to do — it's a lack of things that children will actually do without adult facilitation. Trips and activities require planning and cost money and take time. What I needed was something that my children could pick up and use independently, in the garden, without me having to organise anything.

The Mega Surprise Box appealed immediately because of the variety. Twelve pieces of outdoor activity equipment means twelve different things to try, twelve different ways to play, and the element of surprise that makes children engage with things they might otherwise dismiss. I ordered it from ALTOE for £20 and put it in the garden on a Tuesday morning without saying anything about it.

The box and its contents. Twelve pieces of outdoor activity equipment — enough variety to keep two children occupied across different moods, different weather, and different levels of energy. The surprise element is part of what makes it work: children engage differently with things they discover than with things they’re given.

Why This One Specifically

The value is the first thing. £20 for twelve pieces of outdoor activity equipment is genuinely remarkable — individual outdoor toys at this quality level typically cost more than that each. The Mega Surprise Box works because it bundles variety at a price that makes it an easy decision rather than a considered purchase.

The variety is the second thing. Children's engagement with outdoor play is mood-dependent — what they want to do at 10am is different from what they want to do at 3pm, and what works on a calm day is different from what works when they have energy to burn. A box with twelve different activities covers more moods and more energy levels than any single toy could.

The outdoor focus is also exactly right for summer. Screen time is easy and indoor play is easy, but outdoor play requires equipment and a reason to go outside. The Mega Surprise Box provides both.

What Happened When I Put It in the Garden

My children found it within about ten minutes. I heard the back door open, then silence, then the kind of excited conversation that children have when they've discovered something unexpected. They were outside for four hours that first day. They came in for lunch, went back out, and were still outside when I called them in for dinner.

The pattern repeated the following day, and the day after that. By the end of the first week, going outside had become the default rather than something that required negotiation. By the end of the second week, they were inviting friends over to play with the toys. By the end of the summer, the box had been used so thoroughly that some of the items needed replacing — which is the best possible review of outdoor toys.

How It Changed Things

My children spent the summer outside. That sounds simple, but the implications are significant: they were more active, better slept, less fractious, and more creative than in previous summers. Outdoor play does things for children that indoor play doesn't, and the Mega Surprise Box was the thing that made outdoor play the easy, default choice rather than something that required effort.

I also had more time. Not because I was ignoring my children — I was in the garden with them often — but because they were self-directing rather than requiring facilitation. They invented games, made rules, argued about the rules, resolved the arguments, and played on. This is what children are supposed to do in summer, and the right equipment makes it happen.

For £20, the PoundFun Outdoor Toys Mega Surprise Box gave my children a summer of outdoor play and gave me a summer that felt like what summer is supposed to feel like. I've already ordered one for this year. I'm not waiting until July to put it in the garden.
