My dining room has always been the room I liked least in my flat. It’s a decent size, it gets good light during the day, and the furniture is fine — a round table, four chairs, a sideboard I’ve had for years. But in the evenings, with the overhead light on, it felt cold and clinical. The kind of room you eat in quickly and then leave, rather than somewhere you’d linger over a meal with friends.
I’d been meaning to do something about the lighting for about two years. The original fitting was a flat, featureless ceiling rose with a single bulb — functional, characterless, and casting the kind of flat overhead light that makes everything look slightly institutional. I knew a pendant light would make a difference. I didn’t know it would make this much of a difference.
What I Was Looking For
I’d been looking at pendant lights for a while and kept coming back to the same problem: most of what I found was either too industrial, too minimalist, or too obviously trying to be a statement piece. I wanted something that felt natural and warm — something that would look like it belonged in the room rather than something I’d bought to make a point about my taste in lighting.
I’d also become increasingly drawn to natural materials in my home. I’d replaced a lot of plastic and synthetic things with wood, ceramic, and linen over the past few years, and a bamboo or rattan light fitting felt like a natural extension of that direction. The three-light design was important too — a single pendant over a round table can look unbalanced, and three lights would give a more even spread of light across the table surface.
Why I Chose This Chandelier
The Bamboo Rattan 3-Light Rustic Wicker Chandelier was exactly what I’d been looking for. The three-light configuration was right. The bamboo and wicker construction was the natural material aesthetic I wanted. The retro farmhouse style was warm without being kitsch, and the dimensions looked right for my dining room ceiling height and table size.
The E27 bulb fitting also meant I could choose my own bulbs — I went with warm white Edison-style filament bulbs at 2200K, which I knew from experience would give the amber, candlelit quality of light I was after. The fitting itself is just the structure; the atmosphere comes from the combination of the shade and the bulb, and having control over the bulb choice was important.
Installation
I had an electrician fit it, which I’d recommend for any ceiling light replacement if you’re not confident with electrical work. The fitting itself was straightforward — the electrician commented that it was well-made and the wiring was clearly labelled, which apparently isn’t always the case with imported light fittings. The whole job took about forty minutes including adjusting the chain length to get the chandelier at the right height above the table.
The right height for a dining table pendant is generally 70-80cm above the table surface, which puts the light at eye level when seated without being in the way when standing. I went with 75cm, which felt right for the proportions of my room.
The Transformation
I turned it on for the first time that evening with the Edison bulbs fitted. The effect was immediate and significant. The warm amber light filtered through the woven bamboo shades created pools of light on the table surface and cast a gentle, dappled pattern on the ceiling and walls. The room felt completely different — warm, intimate, and inviting in a way it had never been before.
I sat at the table with a glass of wine and didn’t want to leave. That had never happened before in that room. I’d always eaten and moved to the sofa. That evening I stayed at the table for two hours, which is the clearest possible evidence that the atmosphere of the room had genuinely changed.
Six Months On
The chandelier has been up for six months. The bamboo and wicker have held their colour and shape without any deterioration. The woven construction hasn’t loosened or frayed. The chain and fittings show no signs of rust or discolouration. For a natural material light fitting in a room that gets regular use, that durability is reassuring.
I’ve also had consistent comments from guests about the light. It’s become the focal point of the room in a way that the previous fitting never was — people notice it when they walk in, and several have asked where I got it. That’s the mark of a fitting that works aesthetically as well as functionally.
Where to Find It
The Bamboo Rattan 3-Light Rustic Wicker Chandelier is available in the Pendant Light Fixtures and Lighting Fixtures collections, within the broader Lighting and Home & Garden ranges.
If you have a room that functions perfectly well but doesn’t feel the way you want it to feel in the evenings, I’d suggest looking at the lighting before anything else. It’s the thing that most affects atmosphere, and it’s often the thing that gets changed last. This chandelier is the best home purchase I’ve made in years, and I say that as someone who has spent considerably more money on furniture that made less difference.
