The Vacuum Bags That Finally Got Rid of the Dog Smell (And I've Tried Everything)

AEG GR203S s-bag Anti-Odour Vacuum Cleaner Bags 4-pack for pets – synthetic bags designed to neutralise pet odours with hygienic seal for clean disposal

I have two golden retrievers. Their names are Bramble and Fig, they are the loves of my life, and they smell. Not badly — not in a way that would make you recoil at the door — but in that warm, unmistakable way that dog owners become nose-blind to and guests definitely notice. I know this because my mother-in-law told me, with the particular directness that only mothers-in-law can deploy, that my house smells of dog.

She wasn't wrong. I'd just stopped being able to detect it.

The Cleaning Routine That Wasn't Working

I vacuum three times a week. I wash the dog beds fortnightly. I use fabric spray on the sofas. I open windows. I burn candles. I have tried every combination of these things and the smell always comes back within a day or two, because Bramble and Fig are always there, shedding and being warm and wonderful and fragrant in the way that dogs are.

What I hadn't considered — not once, in four years of dog ownership — was that my vacuum cleaner might be part of the problem. I have an AEG VX6, which is a good machine. I'd been using standard bags in it, whatever was cheapest and compatible. It hadn't occurred to me that the bags themselves could be actively working against me.

Then a friend mentioned, almost in passing, that she'd switched to anti-odour bags after getting a cat and it had made a noticeable difference. I filed it away and, a few weeks later, went looking.

Why the AEG GR203S

The AEG GR203S s-bag Anti-Odour Vacuum Cleaner Bags were the obvious choice for my VX6. Genuine AEG bags, specifically designed to neutralise pet odours rather than just trap the physical debris. The synthetic construction maintains long-lasting suction — something I'd noticed degrading with the generic bags I'd been using. And the hygienic seal means the bag closes itself when you remove it, so you're not releasing a concentrated cloud of dog smell every time you change it.

That last point made me wince slightly, because I realised I had absolutely been doing exactly that. Every bag change: a small, fragrant explosion. Into the bin, into the air, back into the room.

I ordered a pack.

The First Week

I fitted the first bag on a Saturday morning and did a full vacuum of the ground floor — sofas, rugs, the hallway where Bramble likes to sleep, the kitchen where Fig spends most of her time hoping something will fall off the counter. The suction was noticeably stronger than I'd been getting with the generic bags. That alone felt like a win.

The real test came the next day. I walked in from a morning walk with the dogs — the moment when you're most likely to notice the smell of your own home, because you've been outside and your nose has reset — and the house smelled clean. Not perfumed, not masked, just clean. Neutral. Like a house without dogs in it, which felt slightly surreal given that two large golden retrievers were currently shaking mud off themselves in the hallway.

I vacuumed again mid-week. Same result. The smell that had been a permanent low-level presence in my home was gone, or close enough to gone that I couldn't detect it.

A Month Later

My mother-in-law came to visit three weeks after I'd switched bags. She walked in, looked around, and said “oh, it smells nice in here.” She didn't connect it to anything. She just said it, as a neutral observation, and moved on to asking about the children.

I nearly told her it was the vacuum bags. I decided that was too much information and accepted the compliment quietly.

The bags are compatible with VX4, VX6, VX7, VX8, AB61, and also Electrolux and Philips models, which is worth knowing if you have a different machine in the same family. The 4-pack lasts me about two months with three vacuums a week — reasonable value for something that's made this much of a difference to how my home feels.

What I'd Tell Other Pet Owners

If you have pets and you're using generic or standard vacuum bags, this is the upgrade worth making. The odour neutralisation isn't a gimmick — it works, and it works in a way that's different from masking the smell with fragrance. The house just smells clean. The hygienic seal on disposal is a genuine quality-of-life improvement that I didn't know I needed. And the suction improvement from using properly engineered bags in a machine designed for them is immediately noticeable.

Four years of candles and fabric spray and I could have just changed the vacuum bags. I'm choosing not to be annoyed about that and focusing on the fact that I know now.

The Verdict

An unexpectedly impactful purchase. Bramble and Fig remain fragrant. My house, finally, does not.
