The Polo Shirt I Wear to the Golf Course, the Pub, and Everywhere In Between

I play golf twice a week and I manage a warehouse. These two activities have almost nothing in common except that both of them involve a lot of movement, a lot of sweating, and a strong preference for clothing that does not make either worse. For years I wore cotton polo shirts for both — on the course because that is what you wear, and at work because a polo is smart enough to be presentable without being uncomfortable to move in.

The problem with cotton polos is that they absorb sweat and stay wet. On a warm day on the course, by the back nine my shirt was damp and heavy. In the warehouse in summer, the same thing happened by mid-morning. I had accepted this as the nature of polo shirts until a colleague at the golf club mentioned he had switched to a performance fabric polo and found it transformative.

The Regatta Maverick Active Polo Shirt is the polo I switched to. I have not worn a cotton polo since.

What I Was Looking For

My requirements were straightforward. Quick-dry performance fabric that wicks sweat rather than absorbing it. A polo collar and button placket that looks smart enough for the golf club and the office. A regular fit that is comfortable to swing in without being so loose it looks sloppy. And a price point that meant I could buy several without it being a significant expense — I needed enough to rotate through a working week plus weekend golf.

Why the Regatta Maverick

The Regatta Maverick Active Polo Shirt met every criterion. 100% polyester pique at 130gsm — light enough to be genuinely breathable, substantial enough to look like a proper polo rather than a cheap sports top. The quick-dry and sweat-wicking performance is built into the fabric rather than added as a coating, which means it performs consistently wash after wash rather than degrading over time.

The point collar and 3-button placket give it the classic polo silhouette that works on the golf course and in a smart-casual context. The logo chest print and sleeve emblem are understated — present but not dominant, which is the right balance for a shirt you want to wear in multiple contexts. The regular fit has enough room through the chest and shoulders for a full golf swing without excess fabric that would look wrong off the course.

I found it through ALTOE's Activewear Tops collection, which is the obvious starting point for anyone comparing performance polo options. It also sits within the Activewear, Clothing, and Apparel & Accessories collections if you want to browse the wider range.

Regatta is a brand I had trusted for outdoor gear for years — waterproofs, fleeces, walking boots. The Maverick polo is the same approach applied to everyday activewear: practical, well-made, priced for real people rather than premium sportswear budgets.

The First Round: A Warm Saturday Morning

I wore the Maverick for the first time on a Saturday morning round in July — warm, humid, the kind of day that used to guarantee a damp cotton polo by the fifth hole. I wore it with my usual golf trousers and shoes, indistinguishable in appearance from any other polo on the course.

By the fifth hole, the shirt was dry. By the back nine, on a day when I would normally have been visibly damp, the shirt was dry. I finished the round, went to the clubhouse for a drink, and the shirt looked the same as it had on the first tee. My playing partner asked if I had changed shirts at the turn. I had not.

That was the moment I understood what performance fabric actually means in practice. Not a marginal improvement. A complete change in how the shirt behaves during physical activity.

Six Months of Constant Rotation

I now own seven Maverick polos in different colours. They rotate through my week — two or three days at work, two rounds of golf at the weekend, occasionally a casual evening out where a polo is the right level of smart. The polyester pique washes easily, dries quickly (often within an hour on an airer), and has retained its shape and performance across dozens of washes.

The sizing runs true — I am a large and the large fits exactly as the size guide describes. The range goes up to 5XL, which is genuinely inclusive for a performance polo at this price point.

My cotton polo shirts are still in the wardrobe. I have not worn them since July. I keep meaning to donate them. I will get around to it eventually, but there is no urgency because I have no intention of going back to them.

If you play golf, work in an active environment, or simply want a polo shirt that performs better than cotton without looking like a sports top, the Regatta Maverick Active Polo Shirt is the one I would recommend. Browse the Activewear Tops collection at ALTOE. Buy one, wear it on a warm day, and see what quick-dry performance fabric actually means in practice. Then buy six more.
