My best friend and I have been watching Stranger Things together since Series 1. Not always in the same room — we've lived in different cities for most of our adult lives — but always together in the way that matters. Synchronised viewing sessions over video call. Voice notes at 11pm dissecting plot points. A shared group chat that exists solely for Stranger Things reactions and has been active for nearly a decade.
When Series 4 came out, we watched the whole thing over a single weekend. And when it was over, we both agreed: Max and Lucas were the heart of it. Their story — complicated, tender, real in a way that felt rare for a show about interdimensional monsters — hit differently than anything else in the series.
Her birthday was three weeks later. I knew exactly what I was getting her.
Finding the Right Thing
