I have had dry skin on my back for as long as I can remember. Not dramatically dry — not a medical condition, nothing that required a dermatologist — just persistently rough, slightly flaky skin that no amount of moisturiser seemed to fully address. I'd apply body lotion after every shower, use a decent body wash, drink the water, do all the things you're supposed to do. The skin on my arms and legs responded. My back didn't.
The problem, I eventually worked out, was that I wasn't exfoliating properly. Or at all, really. I'd been using a standard shower puff for years, which is fine for washing but does essentially nothing for dead skin removal. And reaching my own back properly with any kind of scrubbing tool had always been awkward enough that I'd given up trying.
That changed when I found the Eco Bath Natural Sisal Hemp Back Strap.
Why I Finally Did Something About It
The moment that pushed me to actually address the problem was a holiday in Portugal last summer. Hot weather, swimming pool, the kind of situation where you're more aware of your skin than usual. A friend mentioned, with the casual cruelty only close friends can get away with, that my back looked like I'd been sandpapered. He wasn't wrong. I came home and decided to sort it out properly.
I researched exfoliation for dry skin on the back specifically — which is a more niche search than you'd think, because most exfoliation content assumes you can reach everywhere easily. The consistent recommendation was a back strap or back scrubber with natural fibre — something with enough texture to actually shift dead skin, long enough to reach the full back, and made from a material that wouldn't harbour bacteria the way synthetic loofahs do.
Sisal hemp kept coming up. It's a natural plant fibre with a texture that's firm enough to exfoliate effectively but not so abrasive that it damages skin. It dries quickly, it doesn't degrade the way plastic does, and it's genuinely sustainable — which mattered to me as someone who'd been vaguely guilty about plastic shower products for years without doing anything about it.
Why I Chose the Eco Bath London Back Strap
There are a few sisal back straps on the market. The Eco Bath London Natural Sisal Hemp Back Strap stood out for a few reasons.
First, it's double-sided. Both faces of the strap are sisal hemp, which means you get consistent exfoliation across the full surface rather than one rough side and one smooth side that you have to keep track of in the shower at 7am. Simple, but it matters.
Second, the strap design with handles at each end gives you proper leverage. You can pull the strap across your back with real pressure rather than the half-hearted reach you get with a brush on a fixed handle. The tension you can apply with a strap is genuinely different — you can work the full back, the shoulders, and the back of the neck in a way that a brush simply doesn't allow.
Third, the care instructions are exactly what I needed: rinse in clean water after use, leave to dry naturally. No special treatment, no complicated maintenance. Sisal dries quickly and doesn't develop the mildew smell that synthetic loofahs get after a few weeks.
I found it in the Bath & Body and Personal Care collections, and also in the broader Health & Beauty and Cosmetics ranges. I ordered it on a Tuesday. It arrived Thursday.
Using It — What to Expect
The technique takes about thirty seconds to figure out. Hold a handle in each hand, throw the strap over one shoulder so it sits across your upper back, and pull alternately on each handle to work it across the skin. You can adjust the angle to reach the lower back, the shoulders, and the back of the neck. Once you've got the motion, it's completely intuitive.
I use it dry first — a minute or two of dry brushing before the shower, which is the most effective way to shift dead skin — and then again with body wash in the shower for a thorough clean. The strap works well both ways; the sisal texture is effective dry and doesn't go limp or lose its texture when wet.
The first time I used it dry, the amount of dead skin that came away was, frankly, alarming. I won't describe it in detail. Suffice to say the evidence was clear that this had been needed for some time.
Three Months On — The Honest Verdict
I've been using the Eco Bath back strap daily for just over three months. Here's the honest report:
- My back skin is genuinely different. Not marginally improved — actually different. The roughness that had been there for years is gone. The skin is smooth, even-toned, and responds to moisturiser in a way it never did before because the dead skin layer that was blocking absorption has been removed. This is the result I was looking for and it took about three weeks of consistent use to get there.
- The strap has held up perfectly. Three months of daily use, rinsed and hung to dry after each session. The sisal fibres are intact, the strap hasn't frayed, the handles are still secure. It looks essentially the same as it did when it arrived.
- No smell, ever. This was my biggest concern switching from a synthetic loofah — I'd had bad experiences with natural sponges going musty. The sisal dries completely between uses and has never developed any odour. The rinse-and-hang routine is genuinely sufficient.
- It works on shoulders and neck too. I hadn't anticipated how useful the strap would be for the back of the neck and the tops of the shoulders — areas that are awkward to reach with most tools. The strap handles this easily and those areas have improved as much as the back itself.
- My moisturiser goes further. This is a secondary benefit I didn't expect: because the dead skin layer is gone, my body lotion absorbs properly rather than sitting on the surface. I'm using less product to get better results. Over three months that adds up.
The Difference It's Made
I went back to Portugal this spring. Different friend group, same pool situation. Nobody said anything about my back. I'm choosing to take that as a win.
More seriously: I'd been dealing with a skin issue for years that I'd accepted as just a feature of my body, something to manage rather than fix. It turned out the fix was a natural fibre strap that costs less than a round of drinks and takes two minutes to use in the shower. That's a slightly annoying realisation — why didn't I do this sooner — but mostly it's a good one.
If you have dry or rough skin on your back and you've been getting nowhere with standard shower products, the Eco Bath London Natural Sisal Hemp Back Strap is worth trying. Browse the full Bath & Body collection and the Personal Care range for more options.
Start with dry brushing before the shower. Give it three weeks. You'll see the difference.
