I have a rule about t-shirts. Or I had one. The rule was: never spend more than £25 on a t-shirt, because a t-shirt is a t-shirt and the difference between a £10 one and a £25 one is marginal and the difference between a £25 one and a £95 one is impossible to justify.
I no longer have this rule. The Forbes Luxury Menswear Navy Slim Fit Premium Cotton T-Shirt dismantled it completely. I put it on for the first time, looked in the mirror, and understood immediately that I had been wrong about t-shirts for my entire adult life.
That was five months ago. I've worn it more than any other item of clothing I own. I've since bought two more Forbes t-shirts in different colours. My rule is gone and I don't miss it.
Why I Decided to Try It
A colleague arrived at a work event in what appeared to be a very simple navy t-shirt. It looked extraordinary — the fit was perfect, the fabric had a weight and drape that made it look considered rather than casual, and the colour was a rich, deep navy that didn't look like it had come out of a multipack. I asked where he'd got it. He said Forbes Luxury Menswear and that it had cost £95. I said that seemed like a lot for a t-shirt. He said he'd thought the same thing before he bought it.
I thought about it for two weeks. Then I ordered the navy from ALTOE for £95, telling myself I was buying it to understand what the fuss was about and that I'd probably return it.
I did not return it.
Why This One Specifically
Forbes Luxury Menswear make premium basics — the foundational pieces of a wardrobe, executed at the highest level. The t-shirt is their core product, and the quality is evident in everything from the fabric weight to the cut to the finishing. This is not a t-shirt that has been made to a price point. It's a t-shirt that has been made to a standard.
The cotton is the first thing you notice. It's heavier than standard t-shirt cotton — substantial enough to drape properly and hold its shape, but not so heavy that it feels stiff or uncomfortable. It has a softness that improves with washing rather than degrading, which is the mark of genuinely good fabric rather than fabric that's been treated to feel soft in the shop.
The slim fit is also precisely right. Not fashion-slim, not boxy — just the correct amount of structure for a t-shirt that's supposed to look intentional. It works under a jacket, on its own, tucked in, untucked. It's the kind of fit that makes everything else you're wearing look more considered.
What Happened When I Put It On
I put it on the morning after it arrived, with a pair of dark jeans and clean white trainers. I looked in the mirror and thought: I look like someone who has their wardrobe sorted. Not because the outfit was complicated — it was as simple as an outfit gets — but because the t-shirt elevated everything around it. A great basic makes the rest of what you're wearing look better. I'd read this claim many times and never quite believed it. I believe it now.
I wore it to a dinner that evening. Three people commented on it. One asked if it was a particular brand. I said Forbes Luxury Menswear. She said she'd never heard of them but that the t-shirt was beautiful. It is.
How It Changed Things
I think about my wardrobe differently now. The Forbes t-shirt made me understand that the quality of individual pieces matters more than the quantity, and that a small number of genuinely excellent basics is more useful than a large number of adequate ones. I've since cleared out a significant portion of my wardrobe — the things that were fine but not good — and replaced them with fewer, better things.
I've also bought the white and the black Forbes t-shirts since. Three t-shirts at £95 each is £285, which is more than I used to spend on an entire season's worth of clothing. It's also considerably less than I used to spend on clothing that I wore twice and then stopped reaching for. The cost-per-wear on the Forbes t-shirts is already lower than anything I bought before them.
For £95, the Forbes Luxury Menswear Navy Slim Fit T-Shirt is the best value item of clothing I own. I know how that sounds. I also know it's true. Buy less. Buy better. Wear it for years. The Forbes t-shirt is where that principle starts.
