My son Kofi is six years old and has strong opinions about clothing. Specifically, he has strong opinions about not wearing it — or at least not wearing anything that isn't a football kit or a dinosaur t-shirt. Getting him dressed for anything that requires effort is a negotiation that I usually lose, or win only by making significant concessions elsewhere.
When my nephew's wedding was announced, I knew I had a challenge. Kofi was going to be a junior usher. He was going to need a suit. And he was, I assumed, going to be deeply unhappy about this.
I was wrong. The SUITLAB London Boys 7-Piece Suit Set in Dusty Blue arrived, Kofi put it on, and he asked to sleep in it that evening. I'm still slightly stunned.
Why I Decided I Needed It
Finding children's occasion wear that actually looks good is harder than it should be. The options tend to fall into two categories: cheap sets that look fine in photos and terrible in person, or expensive designer pieces that cost more than my own outfit and will be outgrown in six months. I wanted something in between — genuinely well-made, properly styled, at a price that didn't make me wince.
I also needed a complete outfit rather than individual pieces. Sourcing a jacket, trousers, shirt, tie, and accessories separately for a six-year-old is the kind of project that takes weeks and still ends up with things that don't quite match. A 7-piece set that comes together as a coordinated look was exactly what I needed.
I found the SUITLAB London set through Childsplay Clothing and ordered it from ALTOE. The dusty blue colour was perfect for the wedding palette, and the set included everything: jacket, trousers, shirt, waistcoat, tie, pocket square, and a belt. At £89 for all seven pieces, the value was genuinely excellent.
Why This One Specifically
The construction is the thing that surprised me most. Children's suits at this price point are often made from fabrics that look fine but feel synthetic and uncomfortable — the kind that make children fidget and pull at their collars all day. The SUITLAB set is properly made: the jacket has structure without being stiff, the trousers have a proper waistband, and the shirt is soft enough that Kofi didn't complain about it once during a six-hour wedding day.
The dusty blue colour is also exactly right. It's not the harsh navy that a lot of boys' suits default to — it's softer and more interesting, and it worked beautifully with the wedding's colour scheme. The pocket square and tie are coordinated without being matchy in a way that looks overdone. Someone has thought carefully about how these pieces work together, and it shows.
What Happened on the Day
Kofi put the suit on the morning of the wedding with minimal protest, which was already exceeding expectations. When he saw himself in the mirror, he stood up straighter. He asked if he looked like a gentleman. I told him he looked exactly like a gentleman. He seemed very pleased with this.
He wore it for the entire day — the ceremony, the reception, the dinner, the dancing. He danced in it. He ate a three-course meal in it. He ran around the garden with his cousins in it. It survived all of this without looking destroyed, which is not something I expected from children's occasion wear.
At bedtime, he asked if he could keep it on. I said no, but I understood the impulse. He'd felt good in it all day. He didn't want that to end.
How It Changed Things
Kofi now asks, occasionally, if there are any occasions coming up that require a suit. He has worn it to his school's end-of-year concert and to his grandfather's birthday dinner. He puts it on with the same careful attention he gives to his football kit, which is the highest compliment he can pay to any item of clothing.
I've recommended the SUITLAB set to three other parents since the wedding. Two of them have since ordered it for their own children's occasions. The third is waiting for a suitable event, which I suspect she's now hoping arrives soon.
For £89 for seven pieces, the SUITLAB London Boys Suit Set is the best children's occasion wear I've found. It made my son feel like a gentleman. He's been looking for excuses to wear it ever since.
